Twitter Updater — automatically Tweet your blog posts

Calvin August 5th, 2008

SOHSolo Twitter Just installed Twitter Updater — a Wordpress plugin that automatically posts an update to Twitter whenever a new blog post is published to the blog. Now, if you follow SOHOSolo on Twitter you’ll receive a twitter update with a link back to the blog whenever there’s a new post here.

For those of you who don’t know what Twitter is, I’ll be dedicating a post soon to how small businesses can use this short-messaging social media tool to engage productively with an online community that includes customers, peers and thought leaders in your industry.

It’s a great tool for keeping up-to-date with the latest developments on- and off-line, for seeking advice and sounding out opinion.

You might be sceptical about the benefits of a medium that restricts you to posts of 140 characters or less… but the real value of Twitter isn’t so much in the individual posts, but more in the networking, the collective awareness and sense of community that develops over time. Put your preconceptions aside, give Twitter a try and before long you’ll find it invaluable.

Thanks for the comment Brian. Twitter is a really useful tool. Hope to get all the West Cork SOHO Solos (of which there will soon be many more, we hope) contributing to the online conversation on Twitter and here on the blog before long.

It’s great to start getting comments so soon after starting the blog. Are you a SOHO Solo member yourself?

    Hi Calvin (et al),

As you know I’m a twit…er is there a better name, in fact a fairly recent convert and rapidly an enthusiast. I’ve been making web sites for a good while and blogging too but twitter has really taken my attention recently.

It seems a little like when mobile phones where taking off and suddenly people discovered texting. I read some recent figure about people sending more texts now than they are making phone calls in Ireland which doesn’t surprise me.

But back in the day….ah…when I got my first mobile brick it had texting capabilities but the text system was not enabled. When I made inquires with the supplier they said “Oh that’s something for business people but it won’t catch on in Ireland”.

Anyhow, back to the business at hand. I explain twitter to people as ‘like sending text messages on-line’ which it kind of is but you can also choose if the message goes to all the world or just to one person.

You can choose to just look at messages from your friends (called followers) or all the messages that are being sent out on the twitter network (which is pretty pointless unless you are really bored as mostly you will not be able to follow what is going on).

I’ve simplified things but if you have some friends who twitter it’s a social pastime and it can end up like a group conversation as people update everyone with what they are doing.

Add to the mix updates from news services you can sign up for (start following, in Twitter speak) or updates informing you that your favourite blogs have been updated, you end up with your own little news wire service.

There are a mass of esoteric services out there for twitter but to start the basics are simple; from a web page you type in 140 characters and press send, and off your message goes. Simple!

I’m sure Calvin will fill you in soon on the ins and outs of setting up twitter but as he says the best way is to dive in and if you want to twitter with me, type or paste http://twitter.com/DeepSpin into your browser address bar and get started.

All the Best Dave at Beara.ie

    Thanks Dave,

Note to self… must post a *getting started on twitter* blog post soon. One on using Skype for business in the pipeline… will get onto the Twitter one next.

(I’m sure I used to have another business alongside this SOHO Solo stuff… once upon a time… ;-) )
